Amn-e-Maraka (Gathering of Peace) Talks’ was launched at Altit Fort, Hunza on May 28th 2019. This was initiated by one of our Salamti Fellows from Cohort-I, Ehsam Ullah Baig who invited notables including District Commissioner of Hunza, District Health Officer, Principal of AKHSS and various other community leaders. They all shared their vision and opinions on current and emerging issues in community and mechanisms to tackle such problems. The talks were followed by an open discussion of the panelists with the audience, mainly encouraging youth to share their concerns and seek advice from the community leaders. The immediate action was taken by DC Hunza to setup the committee regarding issues like suicides, better integration of education and health care units. The talks are aimed at reviving the long cherished tradition of dialogue known as “Maraka” in the local language. The Maraka held at specially designed town center known as “Chataq”. The architecture of the center is a physical manifestation of the cultural values of the community. This being the first talk in its series will be a torch bearer for reviving discussions on peace and conflict-resolution for better mental health, by focusing on learning from tradition and culture, through engaging youth, elders, community leaders and government representatives on a common platform.
