Social media plays a very vital role in today’s society. A large number of our youth prefers to spent their time on social media, in sharing photos, narratives, updating status, debating over political, social and religious issues and so on. Moreover, it can also be observed that our generation is somewhat addicted to social media. Sometime they could not pay enough attention to their studies or other jobs, which results in negative. An informal discussion among students of Jamia Naeemia, from different classes, held on the topic of “Youth and Social Media”. There were six members in discussion other than resource person and discussion lasted for about 60 minutes, recorded as well. These students were regular user of social media sites like Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, YouTube, etc. While responding to the question about importance of social media in life, they said: it plays a very positive role in communicating people with one another. Some said: they were advised by their friend and cousins that they should use social media for better communication. Further commenting on the role of social media, they said: it enables them to share their activities with other or they also share their status through social media. One student, who once joined Facebook but left it later on said: I joined it with great motivation, following my friends or some family members but the site could not satisfy my emotions or could not enable me to do something positive. In response to question about what is the best social media site(s) according to them, they differed in their views. Some said: Twitter is good because mostly educated people use this site and they use non-abusive language as well. Some said: they prefer Facebook because it connects you to a large community, it enables you to get access to everything that you want. You can either find good or bad as well on Facebook. You are 100% independent in your choice. The discussion was also aimed to get their views about how they counter extremist narratives on social media. They said in response that no doubt it’s necessary to keep ourselves up Youth and Social Media | Amir Hussain Qureshi 3 to date about social and political issues. Whenever they counter any extremist narrative, they said: they usually ignore it or sometime if it is better, they responded to it with authentic information as well. They also said, sometime they have to face threats because of their posts on social media. Their friend and family members warned them to del posts. While responding to the question that how we can stop our generation or people from negative use of media? They said that there should be social media education for those who do not know the positive use of social media. Government and other social institutions should take steps to promote positive use of social media. Commenting on the role of media, one participant said, it also causes depression and stress. When we desire for likes or followers but we could not achieve our goals, its results in stress and depression. So, we should not be addicted to it. We should use it for enjoyment and for learning as well. They said: they prefer to visit one’s profile before accepting someone’s request or before sending friend request to someone. They also visit timeline of those persons whom they want to add in their friend list. They further said they prefer to add those people whom they have met face to face or whom they know very well. They also follow celebrities, politicians and social media activists as well.
