Mahrukh Memon is an MPhil scholar and Teaching Assistant at University of Sindh. She has been actively engaged in peace building and social change in Pakistan for past six years. She is a Peace Agent at Peace Without Borders-Pakistan and alumni at Community World Service Asia. Mahrukh is a social activist, trainer and a writer.

She has been an active volunteer for social causes at Circle K international, SOS village, Mukhtalif Magar Mutahid, Youth United for Social Change, Rising Pakistan, The Awakeners, Young Social Reformers and multiple independent campaigns to mention a few.

Besides, she is a former cultural ambassador of Pakistan to USA and currently serving in Pak-US Alumni Network. She is also an ambassador at Food Savers, actively fighting to eliminate food wastage and end hunger.

She is a passionate peacebuilder, currently working on diversity and inclusion under project Little Thoughts for Peace.

Peace Agent 82 – MAHRUKH MEMON

Agenda

A session was followed by an essay competition at University of Sindh, Jamshoro on 22-01-2020 under the call of Little Thoughts for Peace.

Audience

The participants were university level students. Around 25 candidates participated in essay competition and more than 60 participants attended the session.

Activity

  • An online trilingual essay competition was held on topic ‘Diversity in Pakistan’.
  • The essays and peace quotes were collected from participants to get them thinking about the importance of peace in our lives and society.
  • After the deadline of essay competition, a session was conducted.
  • The session began with recitation and anthem, which were followed by an ice breaker activity in which participants introduced each other and discussed why they participated in the event.
  • The participants were then asked to close their eyes and reflect. The reflection set the momentum for the session.
  • Following that, the participants shared their understanding of peace on sticky notes. It was hard for them to define peace, nevertheless they came up with interesting and unique responses.  
  • I started the formal session with brief introduction of Salamti Fellowship, then talked about peace, its need and scope at personal as well as societal level.
  • The next topic under discussion was ‘Why Diversity Matter?’. The participants took interest in the discussion and shared amazing experiences.
  • After that, Miss Benazir talked about ‘Personality Management and Inner Peace’.
  • Later, a brief talk on Conflict resolution engaged the participants.
  • The talk was followed by an activity in which the participants worked in groups and discussed Problems, Hurdles and Solutions to Peacebuilding in Pakistan.
  • Afterwards, role of individuals in peace-making was discussed. Many local, national and international examples were shared. Participants then had a brainstorming session on their role in peacemaking.
  • At the end, all made peace resolutions.  
  • To conclude, Director IELL joined the ceremony and announced the results of essay competition.
  • The session ended with refreshments and revived spirit of peace.  

Outcomes and Impact

The essay competition made the candidates brainstorm and reflect on beauty of diversity. By the end of session, participants were conscious about importance of peace for self and society. They were eager to take part in more activities related to peace. They made peace resolutions to tackle conflicts peacefully and celebrate diversity.
